Why Integrated marketing Communication is Important
In week 4, the concept that stuck with me the most was Integrated marketing Communication, or IMC. IMC is the process of coordinating marketing messages across varying channels so that they work together to deliver a more significant impact. Instead of differentiating digital and traditional marketing mediums, businesses should make sure that their marketing delivers a consistent message across platforms and channels.

A brand that exemplifies this is Apple. When Apple launches a new iPhone, Apple promotes it through their website, social media, YouTube, retail outlets, and events. In spite of each channel delivering their marketing differently, they are consistent in the message and brand identity of Apple. This is a clear demonstration of the Integrated Marketing Communication principle; consistent messaging creates stronger customer experiences in comparison to relying on only one platform.
Here is a YouTube video promoting the Apple iPhone 17, and here is the product’s main page from Apple’s website itself. The core message is consistent across both platforms, highlighting that the iPhone 17 is Apple’s most advanced, capable iPhone made for professionals and creators, with the performance, durability, and camera technology taking centre stage as the focal points of the product.
This separate video by Apple, sticking to their IMC, promotes the camera of the iPhone 17.
Measuring Campaign Success
One more crucial takeaway was that marketers should not rely on vanity metrics alone. This includes likes and impressions, as such KPIs are not always linked to the campaign objectives. For instance, if the goal of the campaign was to increase sales, metrics such as conversion rate and cost per acquisition(CPA) would be far more meaningful to track in comparison to engagement. Measuring the correct metrics allows businesses to discern whether or not their campaigns are actually successful.
All in all, week 4 taught me that proper digital marketing is not simply about reaching customers through many channels, but also ensuring the channels work cohesively to deliver a consistent message, and are measured against clear, fair businesses goals.
