Why SMART objectives are the foundation of digital marketing
In week 3, the concept that stood out to me was the importance of setting SMART objectives. Many businesses want to increase sales or grow their online presence, but do not have clear goals, making it difficult to measure if a campaign actually achieved success. The SMART framework ensures that objectives are Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
A good example of this is Spotify Wrapped. Rather than encouraging people to use the app, Spotify created a campaign that motivates their users to share personalized listening summaries on social media. This aligns with their business goals by increasing brand awareness and user engagement, while the campaign’s performance can be measured via shares, impressions, and engagement. This makes the goals clear, rather than relying on a vague statement such as “making Spotify more popular”.

SOSTAC : Planning before executing
Another framework introduced in week 3 was SOSTAC, which provides a step-by-step approach to building digital marketing plans. Beginning with situation analysis helps businesses understand their customers, competitorsf, and their current performance before deciding on their objectives. It goes to show that successful campaigns don’t happen by chance, but with careful planning.

RACE : Guiding the customer journey experience
The RACE Framework showed me that digital marketing is more than simply attracting attention, but rather guiding customers through the stages of Reach, Act, Convert, and Engage. This creates long-term relationships, rather than focusing on singular one-time sales, as customer engagement continues even after a purchase has been completed.

All in all, this week’s lecture changed the way I see digital marketing. I used to believe that successful campaigns only depending on creative content. Now, I realize that planning and setting clear goals are equally as important. Frameworks such as SMART, SOSTAC, and RACE help us create campaigns that are not only creative, but are accurately measurable and effective.
